Call for Proposals
Organizers: Manuela Caiani (SNS), Giuliana Sorci (SNS) – SISP Standing Group Convenors; Gianni Piazza (Univ. Catania)

Following the success of last year’s first edition, the SISP Standing Group on Social Movements and Political Participation, in collaboration with the University of Catania and The Open Journal of Sociopolitical Studies “Partecipazione and Conflitto” (PaCo), proposes a second edition of the Study Day entitled “Social Movements and Collective Action in Times of Multiple Crises”, that will be held on May 26-27, 2023, in Catania.
The event is mainly directed to young researchers and create a common space of reflection on the “state of art” of social movement studies, beyond and within the SISP (Società Italiana di Scienza Politica) annual conference. The event will take place over two days and has a rich program: an opening round table with senior scholars from the PaCo’s editorial board on the history and the new venues for research in social movement studies; four panel sessions to present preliminary or consolidated papers; one professionalizing workshop on submission and peer review processes in high quality journals; a final roundtable with representatives of local social movement and activists.

The workshop will includes 4 thematic panels:
1. Mobilizations & Contentious politics in pandemic;
2. Environment & Urban movements;
3. Gender, feminism & Labour conflicts
4. Digital /Internet & Mobilisations (including disinformation, fake news, hate speeches; but also European values and solidarities in the online public sphere).

We open this Call for Proposals for young researchers interested in social movements studies and political participation from below who are especially welcome, above all PhD students and postdoc research fellows (no matter if belonging or not to the SG), and that want to share their works, ideas, and research projects.
While policy makers often react with “emergency measures” to crises, social movements refuse the emergency narrative proposed by power holders, recalling to the structural nature of such crises, and trying to overturn the perception of the irreversibility of the events. Thus, while social movements defend rights that are perceived as at risk, they also suggest other possible solutions and narratives, building networks based on mutual trust and solidarity. Current times are characterized by the effects of Covid-19 period, the war, the spread of illiberal governments, the climate change and
socioeconomic crisis. These are all circumstances that affect policy and politics, but they are also struggle fields, and opportunities for progressive social movements and counter-movements. Thus, we propose an open call addressed to research works that reflect on and analyse social movements in time of crises.
Proposals from diverse disciplines are always welcome, and there is no restriction of geographical area or research methods used. We also encourage young scholars to share not only papers, but also research projects, ideas, research agendas.
We invite those interested to send an abstract (500 words max) to by March 7th, 2023. Acceptance of the proposals will be announced by March 17th, 2023.
No participation fee is needed. There will be a partial reimbursement for accommodation expenses for precarious researchers (more information about the reimbursement will follow).
