May 16-17, 2024 – Scuola Normale Superiore, Florence
Call for Proposals

Following the success of the previous editions, we are glad to announce that the SISP Standing Group on Social Movements and Political Participation, in collaboration with the Scuola Normale Superiore, the Observatory on Politics and Institutions (OPI) of the University of Pisa, the COSMOS laboratory and the Open journal of Sociopolitical Studies Partecipazione e Conflitto (PaCo), is opening a call for proposal towards the next study days edition to be held on May 16-17, 2024, in Florence.

There has been much discussion, especially in recent years, about how various crises have layered upon each other, multiplying or expanding their effects on society and political systems: the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recession, energy supply issues, conflicts and wars, climate and ecological crises, and the rise and consolidation of illiberal regimes. In response to these challenges, politics has often resorted to emergency measures, neglecting the structural dimension of these phenomena, which have fuelled an increasingly polarized political debate. We know that what is considered an “emergency” is also a field of political conflict for social movements, highlighting the structural dimension of ongoing phenomena, and proposing alternative solutions and narratives, building networks based on solidarity and mutual trust.

This year, we aim to discuss various themes encompassing opposition to war, the climate crisis, the pandemic, labour movements, conflicts related to gender and sexuality issues, as well as talk about contentious practices in the digital space, urban and rural movements. Additionally, we seek to engage in discussions and make room for projects employing different theoretical approaches, including structuralist, cultural, or those related to the sociology of emotions, to reflect more deeply on how we study grassroots political participation.

We open this Call for Proposals for young researchers with an interest in social movements studies and political participation from below, particularly PhD students and post-doc research fellows (no matter if belonging or not to the SG) that want to share their works, ideas, and research projects. Proposals from diverse disciplines are welcome, and there are no limitations regarding geographical area or research methodologies. We also encourage young scholars to share not only papers, but also research projects, ideas, research agendas.

We invite those who are interested to submit a long abstract (1000 words max) to by February 25th, 2024, including a detailed explanation of the theme addressed, the theoretical framework, and methodology employed.

Acceptance of the proposals will be announced by March 1st, 2024.

No participation fee is required. There will be a partial reimbursement for accommodation expenses for precarious researchers (more information about the reimbursement and the full program will follow).
